Take Charge This Sexual Health Awareness Month: Free Tools for a Healthier Life!
September 11, 2024
September is Sexual Health Awareness Month and Barry-Eaton District Health Department (BEDHD) is proud to participate by raising awareness about sexually transmitted infections (STIs) reducing stigma, and discrimination, and empowering individuals with the knowledge and resources for prevention, testing, and treatment.
Sexually transmitted infections, including Chlamydia, Gonorrhea, and Syphilis, are among the most common infections in Michigan. In 2023, about 52,000 people in Michigan were diagnosed with one of more reportable STIs, including 591 cases within the Barry-Eaton Jurisdiction. However, STIs can be prevented and treated with education, timely testing, and access to resources.
BEDHD offers several FREE (and reduced cost) tools to help individuals take charge of their health:
- STI Testing: Low cost and confidential STI testing services are available at BEDHD. Testing is essential for early detection and treatment of STIs, helping to prevent further transmission and complications. Individuals can take control of their sexual health by knowing their status.
- Wear One Program: Condoms are a simple yet powerful tool in reducing the spread of STIs, including HIV. Through the Wear One Program, BEDHD offers free condoms at both of its locations, as well as at participating sites across Barry and Eaton Counties. Additional Wear One Program locations in Barry and Eaton Counties that can be found at org/wear-one.
- Vaccination: Vaccines are a highly effective way to prevent certain STIs, including Human Papillomavirus (HPV), as well as Hepatitis A and B. BEDHD provides these vaccines at no cost, or at a reduced rate, making protection accessible to everyone.
