Join the Great American Smokeout: Take the First Step Toward a Smoke-Free Future

November 21, 2024

This November 21, the Barry-Eaton District Health Department (BEDHD) invites community members to participate in the Great American Smokeout, an annual event organized by the American Cancer Society to encourage smokers to quit for a day—and take the first step toward quitting for good. In Michigan, over 15% of deaths are directly attributed to tobacco use and secondhand smoke exposure. Tobacco claims more lives in Michigan than HIV/AIDS, alcohol, auto accidents, cocaine, heroin, murders, and suicides combined.

Quitting smoking is one of the most powerful decisions anyone can make to enhance their health. Beyond physical health, quitting smoking can save money, improve mental health, and protect loved ones from the harmful effects of secondhand smoke.

The health benefits of quitting smoking begin almost immediately:

  • Within 20 minutes: Blood pressure and heart rate drop.
  • Within 24 hours: Nicotine levels in the blood drop to zero, and risk of heart attack decreases.
  • Within one year: Risk of coronary heart disease is cut in half.
  • Within ten years: Risk of lung cancer is cut in half.
  • For pregnant women, quitting early can prevent complications for their developing babies.

While the journey to quitting can be challenging, it is achievable with the right support and preparation. Understanding what to expect, exploring available options, and knowing where to find help are key to success. Resources to help quit:

  • Adults: Michigan Tobacco Quitlink (1-800-784-8669) provides free counseling for individuals and nicotine replacement therapy, webchat or call today!
  • Teens (13-17): My Life My Quit (Text "Start My Quit" to 36072) is a free confidential resource for teens struggling to quite tobacco products.

It’s never too late to quit. No matter your age or how long you’ve been smoking, quitting brings immediate health benefits and opens the door to a healthier, smoke-free life full of new possibilities.
