Barry-Eaton District Health Department Investigating Sewage Discharge at Temporary Event Site
May 29, 2026
On May 29, 2026, the Barry-Eaton District Health Department (BEDHD) confirmed a discharge of sewage and wastewater onto the ground in the parking lot at 5330 W. Saginaw Highway in Lansing.
The site is currently being used by Cirque Italia Water Circus, which was scheduled to open to the public on May 29, 2026. The event includes onsite campers and temporary campground operations for event staff and workers.
BEDHD is working with event operators and property representatives to address the issue and ensure steps are taken to protect public health and safety.
Temporary campground operations and wastewater systems at the site must meet health and licensing requirements approved by BEDHD. Untreated sewage and wastewater can spread germs, cause illness, and create unsafe conditions for the public and event staff.
Because the site is being used for a public event with expected visitors, immediate action is needed to reduce the risk to public health.
Under the Michigan Public Health Code (MCL 333.2451), BEDHD has determined that conditions at the site constitute an imminent public health hazard requiring immediate corrective action. Once conditions are corrected and meet public health requirements, the event may reopen.
BEDHD is working with Eaton County Administration, Delta Township Administration and County Officials to protect the health and safety of the public. BEDHD will continue to monitor the situation and provide updates as needed.
