Sexually Transmitted Infections and HIV

Getting tested and treated for STIs (Sexually Transmitted Infections) and HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus) is an important part of your overall health. At BEDHD, we offer confidential testing, treatment, and counseling. All services provided at the health department are by appointment only.

Testing, Treatment, and Counseling

STI/STD Testing

STI counseling, testing, and treatment are available to all persons 13 years of age and older; minors do not need parental or guardian consent. The fee for STI counseling and testing is $22 and payment is expected at the time of service; however, clients will not be turned away if they are unable to pay.

Confidential testing and treatment for chlamydia and gonorrhea is offered at the health department through appointment only. Persons who test positive for chlamydia or gonorrhea are offered free treatment. Their sexual partners may also receive counseling, treatment, and testing. Partners should contact the health department.

What to Expect:

Appointments usually last about 30 minutes. A STI Counselor will complete a risk assessment, while providing education on healthy sexual behaviors. After a brief counseling session, a urine test is completed to test for both chlamydia and gonorrhea. Test results are typically available within a week after testing and provided over the phone or by mail.

HIV Screening

We offer FREE HIV screening. The only way to know your HIV status is to get tested. Knowing your status gives you powerful information to keep you and your partner healthy.

The CDC recommends everyone between the ages of 13 and 64 get tested for HIV at least once. People at higher risk should get tested more often. If you’re pregnant, talk to your health care provider about getting tested for HIV and other ways to protect you and your child from getting HIV. At home FREE HIV Tests are available at Take Me Home. If you are 17 years of age or older and have not ordered from TakeMeHome in the past 90 days, you are eligible to request one or two HIV self-tests. Get a test for yourself and one to share with a friend or partner.

Hepatitis B Vaccination

Clients who come for STI testing may be eligible to receive a hepatitis B vaccine for $23 (or less, based on client’s ability to pay).

Hepatitis B is a serious disease caused by a virus that attacks the liver. The virus, which is called hepatitis B virus (HBV), can cause lifelong infection, cirrhosis (scarring) of the liver, liver cancer, liver failure, and death. Hepatitis B can spread when blood, semen, or other body fluid infected with the hepatitis B virus enters the body of someone who is not infected.

The Hepatitis B vaccine is available for all age groups to prevent HBV infection.
