Discover the Power of Nutrition: WIC Supports Local Families During National Nutrition Month

March 19, 2026

March is National Nutrition Month, an annual campaign that encourages people to make informed food choices and build healthy eating habits. This year’s theme, “Discover the Power of Nutrition,” highlights how the foods we choose each day help fuel our bodies, support growth and development, and improve overall health.

For many families in Barry and Eaton counties, healthy nutrition starts with support from the Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) Program at the Barry-Eaton District Health Department (BEDHD). Currently, more than 2,000 women, infants, and children in the Barry-Eaton community are enrolled in the program.

WIC helps eligible families access nutritious foods, nutrition education, and breastfeeding support during some of the most important stages of life, from pregnancy through early childhood.

Participants in the Michigan WIC program receive benefits for healthy foods such as fruits and vegetables, whole grains, milk, eggs, beans, peanut butter, and infant foods. WIC families also receive personalized nutrition education and support from trained staff, as well as breastfeeding support for new parents.

National Nutrition Month, celebrated each March, highlights the importance of healthy eating patterns and physical activity. This year’s theme encourages individuals and families to discover how small nutrition choices can have a powerful impact on health.

During National Nutrition Month, BEDHD encourages families to:

  • Fill half their plate with fruits and vegetables
  • Choose whole grains more often
  • Try new healthy foods as a family
  • Seek nutrition support when needed

Many working families are eligible, and the program is designed to support healthy pregnancies and growing children. Families who think they may qualify for WIC are encouraged to apply by visiting barryeatonhealth.org/WIC or calling the Barry-Eaton District Health Department at Barry County: (269) 945-9516 or Eaton County: (517) 541-2630.
